Legacy Beneficiaries

Since my retirement, the most gratifying part of giving back is giving of my time. Trying to teach children to have a love for reading and a love for books is, something that excites me. I signed up to become a volunteer reader. We've got a great working relationship now with Cockrill Elementary. It's where the Bookum Room is, where all the books are organized by grade level and, you know, each of the volunteers comes here to select their books before going into their class to, to read. Five times a year, we'll go into the classroom and we'll spend about an hour with the children and reading books and reading poems to the children. And then at the end, they get to take this book home with their name in it, and it belongs to them. They start in picture books. You get to like the third, fourth, and fifth, and they're moving away, and they kinda don't want the picture books anymore. What is your favorite book that you've gotten from home? It's like a night book, and it's like, it tells you about, like, history of the stars and stuff, and it's, like, really cool, and it matches up, like, it gives you lines and how to pronounce the stars the proper the proper way. And now to see that they have morphed now in fifth grade, today, reading the chapter books, they love the choices that he makes, but not only that, he has started to talk to them about poetry. So I used to not be a big reader, but now I've got I have gotten used to, like, big chapter books. They also have, what they call the book bus that is able to go to different locations and interact with people in a different setting other than in the school itself. And, also giving away, you know, books from from that perspective. I love the leadership team that's in place now and the passion that they show for, everything that Booker stands for. And I've fallen in love with it. Being attached to the public schools, here in Nashville is, a tremendously worthy, cause.
